The Foundation Fieldbus （FF）protocol based intelligent valve positioner employs two-wire transmission (FF bus signal). Its operating principle is quite different from that of conventional electric-pneumatic valve positioners: the intelligent valve positioner and a pneumatic actuator form a feedback control loop; the adjusting valve location feedback signal in the control loop serves as a controlled variable and is compared with the set signal value in the microprocessor; via the output port of the main control board, the deviation between the two signals gives pulses of different lengths to control the pressure output via the pressure output port of the I/P conversion unit to drive the adjusting valve.
Used with a pneumatic adjusting valve, the positioner can overcome frictional force and the valve plug's unbalanced force to enable the pneumatic adjusting valve to realize quicker response and quicker and more accurate positioning. It is particularly suitable for places with frequent vibration. It can not only replace a conventional electric-pneumatic valve positioner completely but also be accessed to an FF protocol network system directly. User can read its basic management information such as location number, device number and serial number through an upper computer and monitor dynamic information (such as fully-open, fully-closed, etc.) of the adjusting valve in a real-time manner. Its control parameters can be set and adjusted locally (through the corresponding button or the handheld setter) or the upper computer at any time. It avoids the problem of adjusting valve replacement due to changes of the control system. User only needs to set and adjust the related parameters of the positioner. Therefore, it has been widely used in the automatic control systems in fields like petroleum, chemical engineering, electric power, metallurgy and light industry.
