Ethernet-APL is the new high-speed physical layer developed for use in the Process Automation industry and hazardous areas. Designed to allow smart field instruments to operate at 10 Mbit/s in hazardous areas using the easy-to-deploy intrinsically safe technology known as 2-WISE (IEC TS 60079-47:2021). The two-wire Ethernet technology matches the same technique as a regular 4 to 20 mA loop offering both power and data communication between field device and controller. The high speed offers tremendous capabilities, and access to smart instrument data. Lots of data! During the next decade, Ethernet-APL will have a profound impact on process automation facilities in greenfield installations and brownfield upgrades as many automation equipment suppliers are now adding Ethernet-APL support to their instrumentation, infrastructure, and control product lines.
